Corpus Corner: Getting Started with Corpora (featuring Keith Folse) (CIRT-IG)
3/15/2024
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM PST

Event Description
Overview:
The benefits of using corpora in language teaching and learning are clear: better quality language input for learners; the development of more accurate grammatical and vocabulary knowledge; and the design of more reliable teaching materials. Keith Folse and Margi Wald will introduce corpus-informed resources and share tried-and-true activities for the ESL classroom. If you want to learn more about the "how's" and "why's" of using corpora to design materials and plan classes, this is the session for you. Come get your feet wet!

Presenter bios:
Dr. Keith Folse has taught English as a Second Language for 40 years in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Kuwait, Japan, Spain, and the United States. For the last eleven years, he has also taught online courses, both synchronously and asynchronously. He is the author of 70 English and teacher education textbooks and is a frequent conference presenter all around the world. His presentations often deal with best teaching practices, vocabulary, grammar, and speaking. He has won numerous teaching and research awards from his university, TESOL International Association, and National Geographic Learning.

Margi Wald, CIRT-IG coordinator, teaches first-year writing, reading, and grammar & vocabulary courses specifically designed for multilingual students.  She directs UC Berkeley's Summer English Language Studies program, co-edits The CATESOL Journal, and has extensive experience presenting at and organizing conferences for English language teaching organizations. Unlike Keith, she can list only two books to her name: She co-edited Teaching U.S.-educated Multilingual Student Writers (with Mark Roberge and Kay Losey) and co-authored the textbook Exploring Options in Academic Writing: Effective Vocabulary and Grammar Use (with Jan Frodesen).
