Workshop Abstract:
This March, many in the field will be reaching a bittersweet milestone—one year of remote instruction.  At this point, learners and educators alike may find themselves able to shift away from survival concerns, such as how to use the basic functions of Zoom, and toward taking full advantage of the opportunities online learning offers.  This workshop will suggest tools and strategies for ESL instructors looking to freshen their Zoom teaching and troubleshoot persistent challenges.  In addition to presenting engaging whole class and group activities that can be modified for a variety of courses, the workshop will cover recommendations for before, during, and after breakout rooms.  Following this presentation stage of the workshop, attendees will have the chance to work in groups to brainstorm ways to apply the content to their own classrooms.
 
Bio:
Savyonne Steindler earned her BA in Anthropology and Jewish Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an MS in Education with a concentration in TESOL from California State University, Fullerton. She currently teaches noncredit ESL at Irvine Valley College and Orange Coast College.  Along with Marely Cervantes, she is co-author of ESL for Parents of Elementary School Children: English Skills to Advocate for Your Child’s Success.

The final part of the workshop will be a moderated Q&A session with a panel of highly skilled online instructors who work in credit and noncredit community college programs throughout Orange County.  Participants will have the chance to ask about challenges they face in their own Zoom classrooms and recommendations for teaching different language skills online.  The panelists will be: Sylvia Henel, Alice Lin, Corrina Lopez, Femia Scarfone, and Savyonne Steindler.
 
Panelists:
 
Sylvia Henel is adjunct faculty in ELL at Golden West College and AESL at Irvine Valley College. She has taught every proficiency level and skill, and loves using materials and activities that engage students. Sylvia likes to teach integrated skills the most, especially when combined with cross-cultural learning.
 
Alice Lin has taught ESL for 18 years in Hawaii, California, and Japan. She graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Master's degree in ESL and from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics.  She currently teaches in the AESL program at IVC and can be reached at alin65@ivc.edu.
 
Corinna Lopez is an Assistant Professor at NOCE. She earned her MS at CSUF. Corinna has been teaching credit/noncredit ESL for 6 years. Recently, she was integral in the transition to distance education providing mentoring for DE compliance. At NOCE, she teaches citizenship and coordinates the EL Civics objectives, curriculum, and assessments for NOCE.

Femia Scarfone is a full-time faculty member of ESL at Saddleback College. She is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership for the Community College at California State University, Fullerton, where she also received an M.S. in Education for TESOL. Professor Scarfone has been involved in the field of ESL since 2006, teaching all levels at diverse community colleges, intensive English programs, and adult schools in the Orange County area. She has presented at several conferences and has been an active member of the Orange County Chapter of CATESOL since 2009.
