Inaugural Plenary Presentation:

Social Justice, Teaching ESL and The World in 2020

The year 2020 has brought to light the need for societal change in an unprecedented way, from the inequities revealed in fighting a global pandemic to widespread calls for antiracist work. Have you considered what a commitment to social justice would look like within the realm of ESL teaching as well?  Because English Language Teaching is historically not a neutral profession, it’s critical that we understand and explore the racist origins of our profession and how to go beyond being “not racist” and proactively be anti-racist, and unravel racism from our curriculum, practices, and interactions for a more racially just curriculum, program, and department.
