Event Description
Intonation: Have We Been Teaching Our Students to Stress Too Many Words?
In 2015, at the Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching (PSLLT) conference, Dr. Wayne Dickerson said that we were teaching our ESL/EFL students to stress too many content words in a phrase (thought group). While he explained his theory, he did not discuss how to teach this new “take” on pronunciation. Ellen Lange will explain how she developed a method for teaching the “new intonation” and will lead a workshop on how to teach it. She will also comment on how and why this “new intonation” makes ESL/EFL speakers more easily understood, particularly in situations where they are using more complex sentence structures, such as in academic presentations.
