Prosody and communicative competence

The Importance of Prosody and Communicative Competence

Description

Teaching prosody to second language (L2) learners is essential for effective communication. Drawing on longitudinal, corpus-based evidence, Dr. Ingrid Bosetti will explore how prosodic features—which encompass stress, intonation, and rhythm—and contextualized authentic learning materials enhance learners’ communicative competencies. The most important component of learning English pronunciation and specifically prosody and communicative competence is the ability to be understood by others (Levis, 2016). A key goal is to inform teachers and teacher training programs on the scope of pronunciation teaching.

Presenter

Ingrid Bosetti, Ed.D., specializes in English pronunciation, focusing on prosody, including intonation, word stress, and rhythm. She integrates communicative competence and intelligibility theory in her teaching. She has led workshops for university language tutors and ESL instructors, developed tailored curricula, and contributed to the International TESOL Certificate Program, Chungnam School District, South Korea, for the Department of Education, UC Berkeley Extension. She has extensive experience in cross-cultural communication, assessments, and enhancing student-teacher relationships. Her work includes creating educational materials and conducting studies on classroom setups and receptive learning models.
